Money hungry game companies, I hate you

For some game companies it seems like money is the only force driving them to make games, rather than at least even a little bit of passion. Everything is so heavily monetized, and DLC content is planned and available for pre-purchase before the actual game has even launched. Games being developed are stopped dead in their tracks as smaller studios get bought by the big ones, because the company is worried that they won't be making money off of it for the next decade.

Even the CEO admits they cancel games they can't milk the shit out of (source).

Why would you buy less when you save buying more at once?

I think micro-transactions are fine to an extent, but when you make them in a way that encourages you to buy more, I don't want it. Especially in a game like Overwatch, where you've already payed for the actual game, and then put your money on "surprise mechanics", as EA likes to call them. Why can't I just buy the one skin I want, and be done with it? Oh right, less money for them. And I do realize that there are games that are live services, and can't be kept up to date with customers paying just for the base game, but I don't think this is the way to do it, especially since there's a lot of studies that suggest that these mechanics cause gambling addiction. But hey, whatever brings in the money even if it's unethical.

CEOs suck

You'd think all that money the companies make from monetization would go to the developers who put in the hard work to get the game out. No, the big money goes to the CEOs. In 2018 EA's CEO was paid $35.7 million, around 371 times more than an average employee gets paid. Same with Activion Blizzard's CEO, who made $28.6 million, which is 306 times more than the average pay (source)

And when it goes a bit downhill for the company, rather than cutting from their own salaries, they'd rather just cut off 800 employees. Cool. If you wish to go more in-detail about why there's a picture of a certain guy with devil horns, here you go.

I don't want to support your greedy practices

In conclusion, these are just scratching the surface why I try to stay away from certain games. I have no desire to fund and upkeep such unfriendly methods towards customers and actual game developers.

  1. This is what bothers me a lot in the game industry. It's truly sad, how things are going. Too bad the whole system is fucked up.
I'm glad you posted a link to a Jim Sterling video, he has so many informative videos about this subject, and I can only recommend watching them.

  2. I don't play so much, but you definetly made me realize something about many games I do play. This sounds like a sad phenomenom that big game developers are taking their direction to.
